Breakfast this morning is basically the same for me-1 egg over easy, toast, fruit. Richard has his usual plate of vegetables-diced beets, tomatoes, cucumber, cheese but also has an omelet and a potato cake. Today is our last full day in Moorea. I have booked a full day excursion for some snorkeling and a BBQ lunch on a motu with Moorea Miti Tours. www.mooreamititours.com Credit card accepted and booked before the FP trip. Cost 20000/$200.76. I selected this outfit because it had good reviews on Trip Advisor but most important it was a small group on a motorized outrigger boat. I much prefer doing things with small groups as it's more personal.
Our pick up by Moorea Miti is on time at 7:45 AM. We pick up some folks at the Hilton. We drive over to where the boat is docked. There will be 11 of us and the captain/guide Wilfred. Our group is 5 French, 2 Taiwan, 2 New Zealand and the 2 of us from the USA. A nice mix. We are off by 8:15 AM. We first boat around the 2 bays-Opunohu and Cook's. Wilfred shows us the mountain inspiration for the 100 XPF coin. He scoops up coconuts floating in the water. He says he will use them later. He plays the ukulele. It's a beautiful sunny day. We stop to see turtles from the boat. We also see the dive boat from Moorea Fun Dive which is the outfit Richard did his diving. We stop where there are several other boats. This is our first snorkel stop in shallow water for the sting rays and black tip sharks. It was amazing to see so many. He takes out a pineapple and shows us how to cut it up for a sweet snack on board before we go into the water. The rays were brushing up against us. There's lots of fish here too. Wilfred has a Go Pro and takes pictures of all of us except Richard with the sting rays. I must be honest and admit I'm a bit upset that Richard did not get his picture taken. He can be such a royal PITA sometimes. Gee, it's only 1 picture! Oh well, what can I do?? On the other hand the girl from Taiwan is a camera hog. Taking tons of selfies herself and having her husband or boyfriend take pictures of her too. She's young and cute and it must be an Asian thing because this is not the first time we've seen this kind of camera behavior. At least she will have proof she was on this excursion! She even hung on to a ray for a ride. Not my thing to do but ........ Lucky for the ray she's tiny and doesn't weigh much! Wilfred has us write down our e-mails so he can send these pictures to us. How sweet is that! Our second snorkel stop is in deeper water-Coral Garden. I have a noodle to help with my anxiety but I stay on the side of the boat where the water is shallower. Unfortunately all the coral and fish are not here but where the others are in the deeper water. 😞
It's time for lunch! Heading to the motu where we see 2 tables with bench seating down by the edge of the water. The guy who picked us up in the truck this morning has been here setting things up. There's a long table where the food will be set out and a grill. It's really quite cute. Our first order of business is Wilfred will demonstrate to us how poisson cru is made. He takes the coconuts he fished out of the water and opens them using just a large stick of sorts stuck in the ground. He's fast and very good at opening the coconuts. He describes a different face on each coconut before using a huge knife to cut it in half and giving it to us-crying, sad........ Inside each half is the coconut water which we can taste. He takes them back and starts to scoop/shred the coconut inside the shell. Using a cheesecloth he squeezes and we get some coconut milk to taste. Much better than the water. A bowl of raw white tuna which he rinses in the sea salt water. Then he squeezes handfuls of the shredded coconut wrapped in the cheesecloth into the bowl containing the tuna. This is the coconut milk going into the bowl. He has another container-chopped tomatoes, cucumber, green onions-that he mixes in. Last he takes the limes, cuts them in half and squeezes lime juice over it all. The poisson cru is done. we each get a tiny bit to sample as the rest will be part of our lunch. It is so good!! While he has been doing this the other guy (wish I knew his name) has been preparing our lunch and setting it up on the table buffet style. We have the poisson cru, plantains I believe, yellow rice, rolls with shredded coconut in the middle, BBQ grilled chicken. Tropical fruit punch. Dessert-grapefruit and brownie. Delicious.
Now Wilfred is going to show us how to make a hat from palm leaves I think. Fascinating. He gives the hat to the son of one of the French couples. Then Wilfred explains to us how natural items can have medicinal uses. He shows us what can be used for insomnia, nausea/vomitting, cleansing the body, help circulation, relieve itching, and much more. It was amazing to hear/see. One of the remedies he cut in half and had us smell. It smelled like blue cheese! All too soon we get back in the boat to head back to our hotels where we are dropped off right at the IC Moorea dock. Wilfred has been so nice, friendly, entertaining, informative. I give him a generous tip as it's been a day to remember.
Tomorrow we head to Bora Bora so we do our packing. 😢 We have drinks on our deck and watch the sunset. We've had such a nice time here at the IC Moorea and the island itself has so much to offer. The landscaping is so pretty with all the flowers, trees.....

Goodbye! |
Tomorrow we head to Bora Bora so we do our packing. 😢 We have drinks on our deck and watch the sunset. We've had such a nice time here at the IC Moorea and the island itself has so much to offer. The landscaping is so pretty with all the flowers, trees.....
Dinner-IC Moorea Beach Bar. We decide to just have a light bite to eat at our resort's beach bar which had been recommended by a couple we met staying here too. They said the cheeseburgers were fantastic. We also had been given a voucher for a free drink as a perk for our anniversary. Tonight would be our last chance to use it. Arriving at the beach bar around 6:15 PM we are told the kitchen closes at 6:30 PM. If we know what we want to order they will squeeze us in. We both opt for the cheeseburger. It comes with fries. Fine. Drinks-Richard gets a Long Island Iced tea and I can't resist the banana mudslide! Perfect way to end our time here. Cost to be added to our hotel bill. 4900 XPF.
