Planning and Preparations

My husband and I celebrated 50 years together on January 29, 2018.  We felt that that many years deserved a big deal trip.  We decided French Polynesia would be the answer.  We were looking for a place where we could really relax and enjoy the sun.  Living in the snow belt area of Colden, outside of Buffalo, NY means 5-6 months of winter weather.  Cold and lots of snow.  Bora Bora and Tahiti were the only familiar names to us.  Who knew that so many islands make up French Polynesia.  We didn't.

A little bit about us.  We are both retired and in our 70s.  In decent health but feeling the aches and pains more now than we did in our 60s.  My husband enjoys scuba diving, golf, good beer.  I love exploring ancient sites, photography, good food, and  being able to laze about on a beach or by a nice pool with a tropical drink close by.  While working we were confined to short vacations so we concentrated on places in Mexico, the US, and the Caribbean.  Being retired means we can plan trips of as many weeks as we want.  Since retirement our trips have been 2 weeks to lasting as long as 3 1/2 months.  We normally plan one vacation each year and I do all the planning.  We have done a few vacations using a travel agent but doing it ourselves means we can go at our own pace, stay where we want, do lots of activities or none at all.  Prior DIY trips since both our retirements have been London, Costa Rica, Greece, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Alaska, Turks and Caicos, and most recently Peru in 2017.  Trips using a travel agent since retirement have been China, Kenya/Tanzania, and Egypt.  Normally I would have planned this trip myself but for some reason I just couldn't get as good a price as the travel agencies.  I asked for quotes from several-Pleasant Holidays from our local AAA office, Legends/Virtuoso, True Tahiti Vacation, and Tahiti.com.  I also checked out Cosco and Paul Gauguin Cruises.

I decided to book our flights from our home to French Polynesia myself.  I used kayak.com and sky scanner.com  I also checked websites of different airlines.  I checked out the reviews of airlines as to comfort of seating, reliability, etc.  In the end I directly booked Delta for Buffalo-Detriot-LAX.  Round trip price for 2 adults was $1319.20.  I directly booked Air France for LAX-PPT.  Round trip price for 2 adults was $2210.96  Ouch!!  Most we've ever spent for airfare for a trip.  Even the airfare for our SE Asia trip was less.

In the end we went with Tahiti.com as I was able to customize our trip.   I also appreciated the ability to correspond back and forth so quickly and easily.  I changed things often and it was never a problem.  I booked our package on 8/4/17 with a small deposit and the final payment was paid on 4/2/18.  The price for our package included the accommodations on Moorea, Bora Bora, and Tahiti.  I asked my scuba diving husband if he wanted me to add the Tuamotus but he said he was fine with just the 3 islands.  That was good because vacationing in French Polynesia is not cheap!  Our price also included all transfers, the ferry over to Moorea, the inter island flights from Moorea to Bora Bora and from Bora Bora to Tahiti.  I requested all Intercontinental hotels.  In Moorea I requested 6 nights in a beach front bungalow.  In Bora Bora I requested 7 nights in an over water bungalow.  Last was 3 nights in a superior lagoon view room in Tahiti.  Travel insurance was optional but we chose it as you never know.........  Total package price was $11688.00

After the decision was made to book with Tahiti.com I decided it was time to do some research.  I sent for The Islands of Tahiti vacation guide from Tahiti-Tourisme.org  I bought some travel guides-Moon Handbooks Tahiti and Lonely Planet Tahiti & French Polynesia.  I used Trip Advisor French Polynesia discussion forum to check out restaurants, things to do, and so much more.  I read trip reports.  I checked the forum almost daily and bookmarked certain posts that I found to be of interest.  I should note that I am a bit OCD and am not a last minute, go with the flow type of person. Generally I am more comfortable having all my ducks in a row but I can make changes and be spontaneous if need be.

Since my husband doesn't like to bother family members to drop us off at the airport and then pick us up when returning home I made plans to park our car in a secure lot the duration of our trip.  Quality Inn Airport also provides shuttle service to the Buffalo-Niagara Airport.  Cost was $135.46 with a $6.00 coupon!  Every penny helps.

I always buy a small notebook where I write down information such as flights, hotels, restaurants, excursions........  I also print out monthly calendar pages.  For this trip I printed out May and June 2018 pages.  I fill in the dates with our hotels, excursions, restaurants.  I can just picture some of you rolling your eyes at me!  I know, I know but what can I say.  This degree of planning isn't everyone's cup of tea but it works for us.  I must admit it was only when we started taking longer trips when we retired that this amount of planning came into play.  This also helps me keep track of expenses/cost of the trip.  This is especially necessary this trip as my daughter spontaneously (she's not a big planner) decided to ask if we wanted to meet up with her, her husband, and our only grandchild this summer in Spain.  They moved to Doha, Qatar last summer for work after living and working in Shekou, China for 6 years.  They decided not to visit family in the US this summer as they had made a few trips in 2017 and air fare to Spain is cheaper than air fare to the US.  His family is in Portland, Oregon and is where their house is that they've been renting out since their move overseas.  Her family is all here in the Buffalo, New York area.  They will be traveling through Spain and Portugal their entire break from school.  We will meet up with them and spend time in Pamplona (running of the bulls per daughter's must do), Barcelona (she fell in love with this city after attending a school related conference there) and Valencia.  They will then head back home to begin the 2018-2019 school year while my husband and I will explore southern Spain.  We will be in Spain for a bit over 5 weeks.  So with an expensive trip to French Polynesia and then a long trip to Spain I need to keep track of finances since we pay for these trips as we take them.

The next item to take care of was to book the scuba diving for my husband.  It's a lot stricter in French Polynesia than we knew.  Because my husband is 75 we had to get forms from DAN (Diver's Alert Network).  He had to complete these forms and have his doctors sign off that he was physically fit to dive.  My husband who has his Advanced Open Water & Rescue PADI certifications and hundreds of logged dives was not happy.  I booked an afternoon 1 tank dive and a next day 2 tank dive with Moorea Fun Dive.  Cost 7500 and 12500 XPF.  They did not require pre payment.  For Bora Bora he decided to go with Eleuthera Diving Bora Bora and was able to request Anau as one of the dive sites.  Cost for 2 tank dive $188.41 already paid.  Then on Tahiti he went with Eleuthera Diving Tahiti selecting Source and Aquarium as the dive sites.  Cost for 2 tank dive $181.17 already paid.  My husband has also opted to bring his own ScubaPro gear as he is comfortable with it and just had it in for its yearly inspection per warranty.

With that done it was time to think about whether or not to book any rental cars.  After much research we decided to book one day on each island.  We went with Albert's for Moorea selecting an automatic.  No prepayment required.  Avis on Bora Bora.  Cost 11900 XPF.  Deposit paid of 1190 XPF/$12.32.  Hertz on Tahiti.  Because we are only 3 nights here and my husband is diving our car rental is the next day and from 9:00 AM-9:00 PM.  Our last day flight home is early morning so we decided to return the car the night before as our transfer to the airport from our hotel is included in our trip package.  Cost 8313 XPF.

For excursions I booked Moorea Miti outrigger canoe snorkeling and motu BBQ lunch full day tour.  I liked this due to small number of people and the positive reviews I had read.  Cost 20000 XPF/$200.76 already paid.  For Moorea I also booked Francky Franck's half day land tour.  Cost $50 USD per person to be paid cash day of tour.  Great reviews.  Since everyone says Bora Bora is all about the lagoon we went with two days of half day snorkel excursions.  Reef Discovery/Pure Snorkeling.  Cost $226.44 paid.  Lagoon Service $179.47 paid.  Both get great reviews.  We are long past excursions involving jet skis and parasailing.  We both have back issues so jet skis are a no no for us.  Parasailing we've done before and it's not a must do for us.

Last, but not least, was food.  Since breakfast was to be included in all our stays we really only had to worry about dinners.  Starting with Moorea I made reservations at Mayflower and Moorea Beach Cafe.  For Rudy's and Le Lezard I was requested to have our hotel concierge call them to confirm.  On the day we have our rental car we intend to stop for lunch at Daniel's for pizza (we always have pizza on every trip-a must do) and then dinner at Hilton's Creperie.  That leaves one night for dinner open ended.  Moving on to Bora Bora I have made reservations at Villa Mahana and St. James.  Others on my radar are Bora Bora Yacht Club, Mai Kai, Lucky House, and Matira Beach Club.  I really wanted to splurge with dinner at Lagoon/St. Regis but was informed that priority is given to guests of the resort and to have our concierge call.  I'm really torn about this as I've read so many amazing, wonderful reviews of this restaurant but getting there from our resort will not be so easy.  We'll see.  Tahiti is easy.  Le Grillardin, our resort's Tiare for the buffet & Polynesian show, and the roulettes in town.

Preparations done.  Packing next.

Packing is a pain

Packing for any trip can be a pain in the butt.  This trip was no exception.  The problem was the regulations pertaining to our inter island flights on Air Tahiti.  Their dimensions are less than what is allowed on our Delta and Air France flights.  Also you are only allowed 1 carry on each, no more than 11 pounds.  Since my husband is diving Air Tahiti allows him an extra 11 pounds.  So he gets 61 pounds and I get 50 pounds.  Total 111 pounds allowed checked weight and our total weight is 107 pounds for the 3 bags we will check on Air Tahiti.  Whew!!  We packed all the scuba, snorkel, float, collapsable cooler in one 29" bag.  Air Tahiti allows total dimensions 59" and our bag is 61"  Fingers crossed.   Then I decided to pack our clothes and items not allowed in a carry on for Delta and Air France into the 25" bag.  Last is our rolling carry on which we can take with us on Delta and Air France but will have to check on Air Tahiti.   I also have a tote which will be my carry on for Delta, Air France, and Air Tahiti that holds my camera and video gear.  Weight 11.6 pounds.  My husband will carry on a back pack containing his diving regulator case and my lap top computer on Delta, Air France, and Air Tahiti.   Weight 11.8 pounds.  So these 2 small carry ons are both a tiny bit over Air Tahiti's allowance of 11 pounds per person.  Fingers crossed.

Here's what I packed for our trip.  I used a lot of zip loc bags-quart and gallon size.

May 17, 2018-Departing Buffalo/Niagara on Delta and Air France from LAX to PPT

Our alarm has been set for 5:00 AM but I'm up at 4:30 AM.  Ugh!  Breakfast is tidbits from Tim Horton's and coffee.  Suitcases in the car and we're on the road by 6:30 AM.  We arrived at the Quality Inn Airport where I've made a reservation to park our car for the days we will be gone.  Cost $135.46.  The hotel provides a free shuttle to the airport which is just across the street.

Parking permit

I had printed out our boarding passes the night before.  Checked 2 bags-44 pounds each-whew!  Delta charges $25.00 for each piece of checked luggage so cost $50.00.  We are in luck as Delta is code share with Air France and they have just recently arranged to be able to check baggage all the way through to final destination.  Great.  We don't have to get our bags at LAX and recheck them to PPT.  Yay!!  We are TSA pre check so get through security fast and easy.  Our flight is DL3554 departing 9:01 AM.  We depart 9:10 AM.  No in air service as flight is so short.  We arrive Detroit pretty much on schedule-10:14 AM.  As we're walking to the next gate we are asked some questions by a group of men-what's your final destination....My husband says they're Air Marshals.  Detroit Airport is very nice but it's a long walk to our next gate.  We get to our gate, relax for a bit, then it's time to board.  This flight is DL1559 departing Detroit 12:00 PM and scheduled to arrive LAX 1:51 PM.  I had booked aisle seats across from each other for Richard and myself as we have some issues with our knees/legs and need to get up and walk around.  This flight is longer so each seat has its own flight screen were you can watch TV, movies....Luckily I remembered my head set.  I watched Darkest Hour which was excellent.  I'm a big fan of Winston Churchill.  Drinks-pop/water-and choice protein bar/pretzels/cookies/almonds.  Our flight was uneventful and we are at LAX.  Cost of our Delta flight for 2 adults was $1319.20.  I booked these tickets back in August 2017.

Unfortunately we have a 10 hour layover at this airport.  We leave our arrival terminal to head over to Tom Bradley International terminal.  What to do with all that time??  I suggested we could take a taxi over to Marina del Rey for a bite to eat but Richard does not want to leave the airport.  As per advice from Trip Advisor FP travel forum we purchase a bottle of Bacardi rum at the duty free shop.  It will be waiting for us at our departure gate.  Cost $20.00

Shuttle to Tom Bradley International terminal

I'm feeling hungry.  Wish there was an In & Out Burger here.  I see PF Chang's on the upper level but Richard wants something light.  Settle for Border Grill.  Citrus chicken burrito and Border tostada salad.  Large bottle of water to share.  Cost without tip $34.46.  The burrito is huge so I give part of it to Richard.  I was pleasantly surprised that the food was really tasty.  Much better than I expected from an airport.  Close by there are performers on stilts, dragon dancers,  and live music.  It's for the grand opening of the PF Chang's!  Too late I realize we could have had chicken lettuce wraps.  Darn.  But I enjoyed the food I had.  Time to check mail on my computer.

Last flight Air France.  LAX to PPT.  Never flown on this airline before so curious as to how the comfort and service will be.  I did select seats for us at the rear of the plane-duo seats where there are just the 2 instead of the 3 that are in all the other rows.  Thought this would give us chance to stretch out our legs as the 2 seats occupy same amount of space as a row of 3.  AF76 departs on time 11:55 PM.  Our duty free bottle was waiting for us as promised and we carry it on and place in the overhead bin.  All too soon we are served a snack.  Orange juice, yogurt, apple sauce, roll, pie slice of cheddar cheese, and a TWIX bar.  Movie-The Shape of Water.  Strange.  Then another meal.  Choice of omelet or apple pancakes, fruit cup, yogurt, water, muffin, sliced deli meats, cheese, roll, butter, jam, drink.  I selected tea and the pancakes.  Richard got the omelet.  Not bad but way too much food.  Movie-Coco.  Sweet as most Disney movies are.  We arrive in PPT, Tahiti around 5:30 AM on 5/18/18.  I don't think I slept much, if at all, on the flights so I am tired.

May 18, 2018-We have arrived in French Polynesia; ferry from Papeete, Tahiti to Moorea; Intercontinental Moorea, dinner at Mayflower

Our Air France flight was on time arriving in PPT.  The service was much better than what we get from US airlines.  The seats were ok but wish they had been just a bit wider.  We Americans are not small!  The long flight to get to FP from the east coast is grueling but what can you do??  Faa'a Airport.  There is a female dancer and 2 guys playing music to greet us.  Nice welcome!   There is a long line to get through Immigration and it takes a while even with 4 or 5 agents open.  Eventually we do get through to where we can claim our bags.  Next is to hit the ATM to get some CPF/XPF.  I'm a bit confused because you choose the amount of CPF you want, not the amount of USD.  I select 50000 which will show up on my banking page as $493.00 withdrawal.

We are greeted with a lovely, fragrant flower lei and directed to the Marama van that will take us to the ferry dock.  The rep who meets us gives us an envelope with the ferry tickets in it.  We will take the Aremiti II.  It is much larger than expected as cars are being loaded as well as passengers.  The ferry is very comfortable with inside seating, tables, and a cafe where you can order drinks and food.  We head to the upstairs open deck.  There's a rainbow!  Hoping that means we will have an awesome trip.  The ferry ride is not long-under an hour but it's nice to be able to take in the views.  We can see Moorea!

We collect our luggage and are directed to another van-Moorea Mahana Tours- that will take us to our hotel.  Intercontinental Moorea.  Check in is very smooth and even though we are here early in the morning our bungalow is ready.  Welcome drink-yummy.  Given map of resort, information about breakfast, the restaurants, pools, etc.  This resort is very large.  On the map we see there are tennis courts (don't want to play in this heat!), a helipad, a gym, Helene Spa, Top Dive center, Dolphin Center.  There is a shuttle bus that goes to Let Petit Village for 500 XPF per person each way.  Available from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  Call for return pick up from TOTAL gas station next door.

On our way to IC Moorea

A golf cart takes us to our beach front bungalow #319.  We are steps away from the beach, the pools, and the restaurant for the breakfast buffet.  Perfect location.  Take pictures of our bungalow which consists of a bedroom area, bathroom, sitting room.  There are even pocket doors that close off the  bedroom area from the living room area and the bathroom area from the bedroom area.  Nice deck with loungers, table and chairs.  Great view of the water/beach.  Outdoor shower.  I am extremely happy with our accommodations.  Tahiti.com has done a nice job so far.  We will be here 6 nights, 5/18-5/24/18.  Unpacking done.  Richard gets me a few more hangers.  Send e-mail to confirm dinner for tonight as well as some other places I've made reservations that needed to know our room number.

We decide to head to the pool to refresh ourselves.  Um-the water is a bit cold!  Richard was fine with the water temp though.  I have scheduled a 1 tank dive for him today with Moorea Fun Dive.  www.moorea-fundive.com  They will pick him up at 2:20 PM.  Cost 7500 XPF.  I buy some postcards and stamps.  Concierge says Rudy's will only provide free pick up if a total of 6 are going.  The concierge also gives me a printed out list of several Moorea restaurants.  While Richard is diving I decide to take a nap.  I hear some knocking but when I get to the door there's no one there.  Knocking again and it's Richard back from his dive.  Tao Toi site.  He saw turtles.  Some fish and black tip sharks.  The dive was ok, nothing out of this world amazing.  Time to get ready for dinner.

Dinner-Mayflower.  Pick up at 7:00 PM.  Drinks-mojito for me and Hinano amber for Richard.  Basket of crusty french bread.  I think what Richard wanted to order-the mahi mahi??-they didn't have so he got the fish of the day special which was a kind of white fish.  It came with local curcuma and coconut milk sauce on the side, pota which is the local spinach, and some other local vegetables.  I ordered the half cooked red tuna with pepper sauce on the side, sliced potatoes, local vegetables.  Both entrees were very good.  Cost without tip 7800 XPF/$77.33.  Credit cards accepted.  No room for dessert but we got complimentary puffy pastry with coconut-yummy!  I left a tip on the table but in going over my pictures I noticed that the menu stated that taxes and service are included.  Need to make sure I check better the next time.  We are beat so early bedtime.  We will find that we are going to bed much earlier than we do at home.  By 9:00 or 10:00 PM ready to call it a night.  The heat and sun take a lot out of you.  Richard has another dive scheduled for tomorrow so we set the alarm for 6:30 AM.
